Sweden—a country in Northern Europe. This is the first exhibition in Japan to focus specifically on Swedish painting within Nordic art, which has attracted widespread international attention in recent years.
From the late 1870s, many young Swedish artists traveled to France, where they learned techniques of Realism, Naturalism, and plein-air painting. However, they increasingly felt the need to address subjects that were related to Sweden. When eventually returning to their homeland, they turned their eyes to the unique landscapes and way of life of the Nordic region. Their works—depicting the small joys of life and the harsh yet beautiful natural environment with poetic sentiment—came to shape what would later be recognized as “Swedishness” in art.
With the full cooperation of the Nationalmuseum, Stockholm, this exhibition presents approximately 80 masterpieces created from the late 19th to the early 20th century, introducing what is often referred to as the Golden Age of Swedish Painting.
