Outline

"Earth Attack" is a painting project undertaken by a group of ten artists centering on Okamoto Shinjiro (born in Tokyo in 1933), one of the leading Japanese Pop artists of the 1960s. (The remaining nine artists are Isaka Yoshio, Ichikawa Giichi, Otsubo Miho, Kobori Reiko, Shimizu Yoko, Shirai Miho, Matsumoto Akira, Yamaguchi Keisuke, and Wang Shuye.) The project was inspired by the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center in New York on September 11, 2001. The project deals with the theme of how bombs and war have affected the earth and its inhabitants, from the Great Tokyo Air Raids and the atomic bombings of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945 to the various conflicts that are currently underway all over the world. The works are distinguished by airy expressions, which stand in contrast with the severity of the subject. We present a series of approximately 150 works, totaling some 200 meters in length, which required 17 years to complete.
