Vision of the Aichi Prefectural Museum of Art

The Aichi Prefectural Museum of Art traces its origins to the Art Gallery within the Aichi Prefectural Cultural Center, founded in 1955. In 1992, with the opening of the Aichi Arts Center, an urban cultural complex, the museum embarked on a new chapter as one of its constituent divisions. Since then, as a leading museum in the Chubu region (central Japan), it has contributed to the vitality of local culture and international exchange through its active involvement in new artistic developments. In 2026, together with the Aichi Prefectural Ceramic Museum, it became one of the museums that constitute the Administrative Agency for Aichi Prefectural Museums.
Several decades after its opening, the roles and functions expected of the museum, both by society as a whole and by the Aichi region, have continued to evolve. In response to these evolving expectations and responsibilities, we work in cooperation with museums in Japan and abroad, as well as with local schools, universities, and businesses, and other organizations. To contribute to the realization of a more creative and diverse society, we carry out our activities based on the following vision.

A Museum Where Every Visit Brings New Discoveries

We envision a place where people of all ages and diverse backgrounds can enrich their lives through art, encounter new perspectives, and broaden their horizons. Through dialogue with others around artworks, deepening understanding and appreciating different viewpoints, we aspire to nurture a generous and reflective spirit. With our internationally diverse collection, high‑quality exhibitions presenting art from a wide range of regions and periods, and our convenient location in the heart of the city, we strive to be a museum that inspires repeated visits, offering new encounters and discoveries each time.

A Leading Museum in the Chubu Region

We are committed to the essential missions of an art museum—collecting, exhibiting, conserving artworks, conducting research, and fostering education and communication. While aligning with international museum standards, the museum serves as a central and leading art museum in the Chubu region, contributing to the community and earning wide public trust and appreciation.

A Museum Connecting Past and Future, Region and World

By fulfilling the fundamental missions described above, we bring artworks, together with their histories and memories from the past, share them with people, and carry them into the future. While developing the art library, we also archive and disseminate information about the museum and its collection to communicate our activities to people around the world.

An Accessible Urban Museum

The Aichi Prefectural Museum of Art is located in the heart of Nagoya City, one of Japan's major urban centers. Building on our convenient location and accessible facilities, and by further advancing our initiatives to provide reasonable accommodation, we aim to be an urban museum that people of all ages and of diverse backgrounds and abilities can easily visit from within Aichi Prefecture, across Japan, and around the world.

A Museum as a Welcoming Place of Encounter and Exchange

The museum fosters a comfortable, welcoming environment—protective of artworks and inviting to people. Our goal is to offer a place where visitors can encounter artworks and artists, become aware of diverse values, reflect on their experiences, and engage in dialogue with others who bring different perspectives.
